Making notes

Whether you are reading for a document review or a literature review, you will need to make notes. This is not just a recording task; writing your own notes will help you to work out what you think (Becker 2007: xi). Reading, note-making and writing is an iterative process which is both underpinned by, and supports, the development of your thinking (Jesson et al 2011: 58–9).

If you have good keyboard skills or your computer supports voice recognition, I would suggest making notes electronically. You are likely to end up with copious notes and electronic storage makes them easy to search. This is a bonus when you’re in the middle of writing up your research or evaluation, and something triggers a memory of a really useful paragraph you saw somewhere that would be relevant to the section you’re writing now. As long as you can remember a key word or phrase, you can find the paragraph you want in seconds, even if you have hundreds of pages of notes – as long as they’re stored electronically. Doing the same search manually, however good your colour coding system may be, would take much longer.

Alternatively, if you are a visual learner, you may prefer to make your notes in visual form, perhaps as mind maps or flow charts (Jesson et al 2011: 61). Some computer applications enable this kind of visual modelling, such as FreeMind and NVivo, or you can use large sheets of paper and add Post-It notes, stickers, and so on to help you visualise and record your reading and ideas.
